How to Download Facebook Story Videos
Facebook stories vanish after 24 hours, which is exactly why people want to save them — a friend's announcement, a behind-the-scenes clip, your own story you forgot to keep. Downloading a story video is possible while it is live, using the same copy-link flow as any Facebook video, but the clock is ticking from the moment it was posted.
The method: open the story, copy its link, paste it into our Facebook video downloader, and save the MP4. It works for stories from public profiles and Pages. Stories from private profiles or friends-only audiences cannot be downloaded by any legitimate tool — if you can only see it because you are friends, no downloader can fetch it.
This guide covers the exact steps to copy a story link (the button is easy to miss), how to save stories before they expire, what happens with story highlights, and the privacy limits you should respect — including why you should think twice before saving someone else's story.
By using this tool you agree to our Terms of Service — download only content you have the right to save.
How to download in 3 steps
- 1
Copy the story's link before it expires
Open the story in the Facebook app or on desktop and tap the three-dot menu at the top right of the story viewer, then choose Copy Link. Do this while the story is still live — once the 24 hours are up and it is gone, there is nothing left to download. For your own stories, you can also find them in your profile's story archive.
- 2
Paste the link into the downloader
Go to our Facebook video downloader, paste the story link, and hit fetch. Public stories and stories from public Pages resolve immediately and show the available quality. If the tool cannot find the video, the story's audience is restricted — friends-only stories are outside what any legitimate downloader can access.
- 3
Save the story as an MP4
Download the MP4 to your device — stories are vertical video, usually 1080 by 1920, and save just like any other download. Move it to your gallery or camera roll so it does not get lost in the Downloads folder. If you are saving your own story, this is also a good moment to back it up to cloud storage.
Why use Ultra Video Downloader?
Beat the 24-hour expiry
Stories delete themselves after a day. Downloading the MP4 while it is live is the only way to keep a copy — once it expires, the file is gone from Facebook's servers and no tool can recover it.
Vertical video, full quality
Stories are shot vertical and upload at up to 1080 by 1920. You get the full-quality file Facebook serves, saved as a standard MP4 that drops straight into your camera roll or editing app.
Your own stories and highlights
Saving your own stories is the most common use case — a story you posted from an account you have since lost, or highlights you want backed up. Your own public stories download with the same flow, no login needed.
No app install or login
The whole thing runs in the browser: copy the story link, paste, save. You never hand over Facebook credentials, which keeps your account safe and the process fast on any device.
Honest privacy boundaries
Friends-only and custom-audience stories cannot be downloaded, full stop. We would rather tell you that upfront than waste your time. If someone shared a story with a limited audience, respect that choice — ask them to send you the video directly.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download someone else's Facebook story?+
Only if it is public. Stories from public profiles and Pages can be downloaded while they are live. Stories shared with friends or a custom audience cannot be fetched by any legitimate downloader. Even when you technically can download a public story, consider whether the person would be comfortable with it — public does not always mean they expect it saved.
What happens after the 24 hours are up?+
The story is deleted from Facebook's servers and cannot be downloaded by anyone, including the person who posted it — unless they saved it to their story archive first. This is why timing matters: if a story is worth keeping, download it the same day you see it.
Can I download Facebook story highlights?+
Highlights are just collections of past stories, and they follow the same rules: public highlights download fine with the copy-link method, restricted ones do not. Open the highlight, play the story you want, copy its link from the three-dot menu, and download it like a normal story.
Does the person know if I download their story?+
Facebook shows story viewers — the poster can see that you viewed their story — but viewing and downloading are indistinguishable on their end. There is no 'downloaded your story' notification. The view itself, though, is visible, so anonymous saving is not really a thing.
Why does the downloader fail on some stories?+
Almost always audience restrictions: friends-only, custom audience, or a story from a private profile. Less commonly, the story expired between you copying the link and fetching it, or it was deleted. Re-check that the story is still live and publicly visible in a logged-out browser.
Can I download stories with music without the audio getting muted?+
The download includes whatever audio the story has — downloaders fetch the file as Facebook serves it. If a story's music was muted by Facebook's copyright system, the downloaded copy will be muted too, because the source itself is muted. No tool can restore audio that Facebook removed.
Stories are temporary by design — if one matters, save it today, not tomorrow. Copy the link while it is live, paste it into our free Facebook video downloader, and keep the MP4 forever.
